Italian PM resigns amid much bickering

Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta submitted his resignation Friday after 10 months as the head of two bickering Left-right coalitions.

Before tendering his resignation to President Giorgio Napolitano, Letta thanked those who had “helped me” amid constant sniping where “every day seemed my last”, ANSA reported.

Napolitano is expected to give the mandate for the formation of a new government to the leader of Letta’s Democratic Party, Mayor of Florence Matteo Renzi.

The president said in a statement that since Letta’s resignation as prime minister was irrevocable, there would be no need for a trust vote in parliament to formalise the collapse of the coalition government. (IANS)
