A large public outcry was seen among the rights group following a video release from British newspaper The Observer that showed the locals in Andaman Islands being treated as Slaves and Human Zoos
The released video, displayed how Men who term themselves as Civilized turned into monkeys.
Andaman Islands is not only the place of natural beauty, but also has one of the ancient and endanger tribe known as “Jarawa tribe” who have been the resident of the Island for over thousand years.
In the video, the locals were seen dancing and were made to sing after a bribe was allegedly paid to a policeman to produce them.
India’s Tribal Affairs Minister V. Kishore Chandra Deo promised to take action over the incident, terming it “disgusting” on Wednesday, and the home ministry has sought a report.
Survival International, which lobbies on behalf of tribal groups worldwide, said the video showed tourists apparently enjoying “human zoos.”
“Quite clearly, some people’s attitudes towards tribal peoples haven’t moved on a jot. The Jarawa are not circus ponies bound to dance at anyone’s bidding,” said Stephen Corry, the group’s director, in a press release.
The Andaman police downplayed the video, calling it “old” and blamed the British journalist for forcing the Jarawas to dance for the tourists.
“It is obvious that it is the videographer who is breaking the law of the land and who is inciting the tribals to dance,” senior Andaman policeman S.B. Deol said in a statement.
You know what, these guys should be striped and should be made to dance in Public. Every individual have dignity of their own. The tourist who played with the livelihood and dignity of the local tribe will only know the feel of its bitterness when they were made to do it that way
