Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar warned the youngsters that money and fame are not always what a true cricketer plays for. He stressed that, there are things that money and fame cant give and that is Pride achieved by playing for the country.
After the huge success of IPL, many young cricketers are even skipping domestic cricket to prepare for IPL. Gavaskar warned this as very bad and dangerous sign for future Indian cricket. He said players should learn to avoid the ego and selfishness that comes from such a large temptation of money that IPL provides.
He recalls his earlier cricketing days saying, it was an honor to play for India and wear the cap for India. He delivered the speech in the function of inaugural Dilip Sardesai Memorial lecture at the Cricket Club of India.
“Today, there are many players in the IPL who are not in the India frame but are still making a career out of cricket. The parents are encouraging their kids to take the sport as a career option. But the worry is that the IPL could become the be all and end all for them,” Gavaskar said.
