Get a Monitor to Monitor you!

Yep! Thats exactly what Japanese monitor maker Eizo Nanao Corporation has done. They have proudly announced their “EcoView Sense” feature in their monitors. So what does this “EcoView Sense” thingy do? To put it in layman’s terms its a motion detector. Its gonna detect whether a person is sitting in front of it.

So why do we need a motion detector in our monitors? Well, its all about saving power. At work and at home we are all in the habit of leaving our monitors on for long hours even when we don’t use them. But now if “EcoView Sense” senses that there is no movement or human activity for more than 40 seconds it immediately puts the monitor into sleep mode.

And yes, when it senses movement up to 120 centimeters to about 4 feet in front of it. It immediately resumes.

This feature is currently available in the just announced FlexScan 20-inch EV2023W and the 23-inch EV2303W. The FlexScan EV2023W is equipped with a VA panel with a 1600×900 native resolution, 178-degree viewing angles and 3000:1 contrast ratio. The EV2303W comes with a TN panel with a 1920×1080 native resolution, 160-degree viewing angles, and 1000:1 contrast ratio. Both monitors claim a 250 cd/m2 brightness, and come with one VGA and one DVI-D input. HDMI was not mentioned, as these are more business-centric displays. These are two of the world’s first monitors to receive the recently announced TCO Displays 5.0 Certification. Why should you care? Well, according to TCO, the tests used in the 5.0 spec are just plain tougher. Also, according to Eizo, these are the first Eizo products to achieve EPEAT Gold status.

Its all about energy-saving . These monitors are also equipped ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the displays brightness according to the amount of light in the room. Now this could be really useful. We don’t have to strain the hell out of eyes when we want to work on the computer just a little before going to bed.

The company is planning to build more compact models of the monitor. They are concerned about reducing the thickness of the monitor to make it more slim and also pack it in smaller packages.

Though this monitor might not be that appealing, it sure is loaded with features that will become a must have feature in all the monitors in the future. Eizo sure has made the first step in to the future.
